Stumbling blocks

Database designers today have several stumbling blocks that must be removed before wide-spread generic use of Unicode will be seen.

There must be greater operating system support beyond just Windows NT. Especially to the to low-end client platforms such as Windows 95, Macintosh, and the Network Computer.

The need for more robust and portable GUI interfaces must be addressed. Java applets help here, but not every developer intends to use Java to enter and display data.

WWW Browsers need to use Unicode. At the time this paper is given, Netscape should be Unicode enabled, and Alis Technologies multilingual Tango browser should be stable. Java should help tremendously here.

More tools are needed for cross-platform development. More Unicode enabled database management tools are needed.

As shown by the string functions chart, a standardized method of defining collations, conversions, locales, and transparent data bindings needs to be worked out.

It is recommended that the various database vendors represented here work together with the operating systems, tools suppliers, and standards bodies to resolve these outstanding issues.
